Chapter 35

Someone had to die.

Byrn had sensed his anger rising with each minute he spent in Randal Byers’ company. The man was a self-centered manipulator whose own ego colored every relationship and situation he encountered. He stood for everything Byrn loathed.

The assassin pushed his rental hard as he chewed through the miles heading west along the Long Island Expressway.

Regan Dia was a different kind of beast. Although not totally convinced where Dia’s cards would fall when the shit hit the fan, her frustration with her father-in-law was palpable. Byrn supposed that with the loss of her husband and a young child in tow, she felt a certain vulnerability. That said, watching her in action in the back streets of Xi’an and then again in Beijing, she’d acted confidently and assertively.

Byrn fleetingly wondered why he was here at all. Dia appeared more than capable of handling the situation, but again, there was the kid. The child had already lost one parent, and Dia was probably sickened by the possibility of her losing another. Or was she more disgusted by the thought of her daughter growing up exclusively under the care of her grandfather?

She’d want for nothing… except perhaps a moral compass.

Byrn grimaced before pressing the gas pedal down harder. Byers was right. Who was he to point the morality bone?

Before leaving the house in the Hamptons, Byrn sat down with Dia to go over some of the details. If he’d stayed in that room with Byers much longer, things wouldn’t have gone well for the smug bastard. The tycoon’s security staff had been taken aback by Byrn’s sudden appearance and even more startled by the state of Randal Byers’ face. But the old man had waved them off. Hemmings, the lead guy, was still wobbly on his feet. He seemed ready to tear Byrn apart limb by limb, but he reluctantly followed his boss’s orders to restrain himself. Byrn knew the type. He’d be hoping for an opportunity to retrieve his dignity and take Byrn down at some point. Of course, that would never happen.

As he drove, the assassin began to piece together an agenda. He wasn’t the kind to make appointments at the office, yet he had several meetings to line up… on his terms.

The first was with Jason Seaton. He and his organization seemed to be at the heart of the scenario. Byrn needed to find out more about Karl Brill, Seaton’s former employee. He also wanted another perspective on how the whole kidnap-ransom bit had gone down. The assassin had little faith in Randal Byers’ recollection of events.

Byrn had an address in his pocket, and that’s where he headed now.

Just after midday, Byrn pulled up at the upmarket two-story home in New Rochelle, Westchester County. From across the street, the assassin noted the fastidiously kept front garden and Mercedes-Maybach S-Class parked in the driveway. There wouldn’t be much, if any, change from two hundred thousand dollars for the vehicle. Jason Seaton must be doing okay for himself.

Byrn didn’t want to waste time.
